On October 25, 2023, the Japanese Supreme Court ruled that the requirement in the Act on Special Cases in Handling Gender Status for Persons with Gender Identity Disorder, which mandates individuals to be without reproductive glands or to have permanently lost reproductive function before being allowed to officially change genders, is unconstitutional.
