DLA Piper, in partnership with Lawyers for LGBTQ & Allies Network (LLAN), invites you to a panel event focusing on transgender rights in Japan following a key Supreme Court decision, together with practical corporate insights on creating inclusive workplaces for transgender employees.
In July 2023, Japan’s Supreme Court issued a landmark decision holding that the decision by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to restrict a transgender employee’s right to use the women’s bathroom was unlawful, marking its first decision on transgender rights in the workplace. The ruling has increased attention to the legal and social challenges faced by transgender individuals, prompting LLAN to work with experts and companies to promote understanding and develop corporate guidelines.

Our event will consist of two panel sessions:
Panel 1: What Everyone Should Know About Transgender Rights in Japan – Lessons from the Landmark 2023 Supreme Court Decision
Speaker:
-Yuka Tateishi, Attorney-at-Law and counsel for the plaintiff in the METI case, will address the key takeaways from the Supreme Court decision and their implications on companies in creating an inclusive workplace environment.
Moderator:
-Naosuke Fujita, Co-Representative, LLAN

Panel 2: The Corporate Perspective: Building an Inclusive Workplace for Transgender Employees
A discussion on the practical issues around creating an inclusive workplace environment for transgender employees.
Speakers:
-Naoko Usami, Executive Officer for Group Diversity and Inclusion Management, Nomura Real Estate Holdings, on the inside corporate perspective.
-Ayumu Horikawa, Akaruku, on the challenges faced by Japanese corporations in implementing LGBTQ policies.
-Tatsunari Ishibashi, Attorney-at-Law and leading labor lawyer, on the employment law perspective.· Moderator:
-Taro Tanaka, LLAN

This event is open to legal professionals, in-house counsel, HR and diversity & inclusion professionals, and anyone with an interest in workplace equality and transgender rights in Japan.
Please feel free to share this invitation with friends and colleagues who may be interested in attending – and don’t forget to RSVP.
Following the discussion, we invite you to stay for drinks, light food, and an opportunity to connect with our speakers and fellow attendees.
